Carragher slams Dejan Lovren after woeful display against Watford

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has slammed Dejan Lovren following his poor performance against Watford earlier in the month. The Reds surrendered their unbeaten run to the league campaign with a humbling 3-0 defeat at Watford and Lovren had a forgettable performance at the heart of the club’s backline.

Speaking in a podcast, Carragher was critical of the Croatia international and said that the centre-back tends to make the same kind of mistakes. He added that the defender tends to close down the forwards at times when it is unnecessary, he told: “I’ve watched Lovren in a Liverpool shirt for so long, making the same mistake. He wants to fight everyone he plays against.Harry Kane started this season and stands on Lovren, just uses his body and knocks him out the way. He’s 28, he should have learnt by now. There’s no problem letting Deeney bring the ball down.”

Lovren has dropped down the pecking order since the 2018 Champions League final where he was one of the top performers for the Reds. At the moment, he is currently the fourth-choice centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip and his position should remain the same barring a drastic change in fortunes.

The 2018 World Cup finalist has another 15 months remaining on his current contract and it appears certain that he would push for an exit at the end of the campaign. Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have been credited with an interest from the Premier League while Lazio are prepared to lure the Croatian to the Serie A.

After spending nearly six years with the Reds, Lovren would surely want a fresh challenge away from the Premier League. Lazio have helped in reviving the careers of Lucas Leiva and Luis Alberto – formerly of the Reds and Lovren could fancy a similar route during the summer transfer window.
